An award winning journalist with experience across a range of local, national and international press and television, with extensive knowledge of current international affairs.
On television, I have produced a number of films for Channel 4 News in east Africa and in the UK. With Universal TV, a Somali satellite television based in London, I worked as a reporter/producer in 2008.
In relation to newspapers, I have contributed to various papers such as the The Times, New Nation, South London Press, Wandsworth Guardian, (all UK-based), Mail & Guardian (South Africa) and Daily Nation (Kenya).
I won the news story of the year prize at the Foreign Press Association Awards 2009 for producing a story which uncovered food theft on a massive scale, with refugees being forced to pay for aid at gunpoint and a network of corrupt businessmen profiteering from their suffering.
In 2008, I produced a report for Channel 4 News which was short-listed for a prestigious media award by Amnesty International. Also I was nominated for Rory Peck Impact Award 2009. In my final year at the university, I was awarded the prize for Kingston University News Reporter of the Year.
While studying journalism degree, I was the News Editor of The River, Kingston University student newspaper. I was responsible for the news section, generating ideas, commissioning stories, motivating reporters and ensuring deadlines were kept.
